Carpal tunnel syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a disorder of the wrist caused by an entrapment of the median nerve (nervus medianus). This nerve runs from the forearm, through the carpal tunnel, to the palm of the hand, and affects the movement and sensation of the hand. Chiropractic care helps to heal and prevent (recurrence of) carpal tunnel syndrome by addressing the underlying causes, not just the symptoms.

What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) happens when the median nerve is squeezed or compressed inside the narrow carpal tunnel at the wrist. This can be triggered by swelling, repetitive hand movements, like typing, using a mouse, or gripping tools, poor posture, or misalignments in the wrist, elbow, or neck that increase tension on the nerve.

Typical signs of carpal tunnel syndrome include:

  • Numbness, tingling, or “pins and needles” in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger
  • Pain or a burning sensation in the wrist, hand, or forearm
  • Weakness or clumsiness in the hand, such as dropping objects
  • Symptoms that often get worse at night or after long periods of hand use

If left untreated, CTS can lead to chronic discomfort and reduced hand function, which can affect work, hobbies, and daily tasks.

How chiropractic care can help?

Chiropractic care offers a non invasive, drug free approach to carpal tunnel syndrome by improving nerve flow, reducing inflammation, and correcting joint and postural imbalances. A chiropractor doesn’t only focus on the wrist but also looks at the whole chain: neck, shoulder, elbow, and wrist.

Common chiropractic strategies include:

  • Gentle adjustments of the wrist, hand, and elbow to restore normal joint alignment and reduce pressure on the median nerve
  • Spinal adjustments in the neck and upper back to improve nerve function from the spine down to the hand
  • Soft tissue work and stretching to release tight muscles and fascia in the forearm and wrist, which can contribute to nerve compression
  • Ergonomic and posture advice, such as how to set up your desk, keyboard, and mouse, and how to take regular breaks to keep your wrists in a neutral position
  • Personalized exercises to strengthen and stabilize the wrist, forearm, and shoulder girdle

Benefits of chiropractic treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome:

  • Less pain, numbness, and tingling
  • Better grip strength and hand function
  • Improved sleep and comfort in daily activities
  • In many cases, a lower chance of needing surgery or long term medication
