Frozen shoulder
The shoulder consists of the upper arm, shoulder blade and collarbone. The shoulder capsule, a thick and tight connective tissue, holds the joint together. Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, causes scar tissue formation and reduced synovial fluid, which restrict movement in the shoulder joint. As the shoulder becomes more painful, the use of the shoulder decreases, which results in a thicker shoulder capsule and a feeling of it to be “frozen” in place. This condition is characterised by gradual pain and stiffness. Chiropractic care helps to heal and prevent (recurrence of) frozen shoulder.
What is frozen shoulder?
Frozen shoulder is a condition in which the shoulder joint becomes stiff and painful over time. The capsule around the joint thickens, tightens and forms adhesions, which limits how far the shoulder can move. It often develops slowly, with pain in the early stages and increasing stiffness later on.
Typical signs of frozen shoulder include:
- Dull or aching pain in the shoulder, often worse at night
- Difficulty lifting the arm, reaching behind the back, or rotating the shoulder
- A gradual loss of movement, sometimes to the point where the shoulder feels “locked”
- Pain that can spread into the upper arm but usually not beyond the elbow
Frozen shoulder can last for months or even years if not properly managed, but most people gradually recover with the right care.
How chiropractic care can help?
Chiropractic care offers a non invasive, drug free approach to frozen shoulder by improving joint mobility, reducing muscle tension and supporting the healing of the shoulder capsule. A chiropractor looks at the whole shoulder complex: the joint itself, the neck, upper back and surrounding muscles.
Common chiropractic strategies include:
- Gentle mobilisation and manipulation of the shoulder joint and surrounding areas to restore movement and reduce stiffness
- Soft tissue work and stretching to relax tight muscles and fascia around the shoulder and upper back
- Exercises and home stretches tailored to your stage of frozen shoulder, to gradually improve range of motion
- Postural and movement advice to avoid positions that keep the shoulder “frozen” and to support healthy joint use
- Guidance on activity modification so you can stay active without aggravating the shoulder
Benefits of chiropractic treatment for frozen shoulder:
- Reduced pain and stiffness in the shoulder
- Better range of motion and strength in the arm
- Faster recovery of normal shoulder movement
- Lower chance of long term stiffness or recurrence
