Pelvis instability

Pelvis instability is a condition in which the joints and ligaments of the pelvis do not hold the pelvic bones together as firmly as they should. This can cause the pelvis to move too much or in an uncoordinated way during walking, standing or other movements. It often leads to pain and a feeling of “giving way” or shifting in the lower back, hips or groin.

What is pelvis instability?

Pelvis instability usually involves the sacroiliac joints (where the spine meets the pelvis) and the surrounding ligaments and muscles. These structures normally keep the pelvis stable while still allowing a small amount of movement. When the ligaments become stretched or weakened—often due to pregnancy, trauma, overuse or poor posture—the pelvis can become unstable and move abnormally.

Common signs of pelvis instability include:

  • Pain in the lower back, buttocks, groin or hips, often on one side
  • Aching or sharp pain when standing on one leg, walking, climbing stairs or turning in bed
  • Feeling of the pelvis “shifting” or “locking” during movement
  • Stiffness or discomfort after sitting for a long time

If not addressed, pelvis instability can lead to chronic pain, altered walking patterns and increased strain on the lower back and hips

How chiropractic care can help?

Chiropractic care offers a natural, non invasive approach to managing pelvis instability and improving stability and comfort. A chiropractor focuses on restoring normal alignment and movement of the pelvis, strengthening supporting muscles and correcting posture and movement patterns.

Typical chiropractic strategies for pelvis instability include:

  • Gentle treatments of the pelvis and lower back to restore proper joint alignment and reduce irritation
  • Soft tissue work and stretching to relax tight muscles around the hips, buttocks and lower back
  • Postural and movement analysis to correct imbalances in standing, walking and sitting
  • Personalised exercises to strengthen the core, glutes and pelvic floor muscles that support the pelvis
  • Guidance on daily habits, such as lifting technique and sitting posture, to reduce strain on the pelvis

Benefits of chiropractic treatment for pelvis instability:

  • Less pain and discomfort in the lower back, hips and groin
  • Improved stability and confidence in walking and standing
  • Better coordination of the pelvis and spine during movement
  • Lower risk of recurring pain and long term strain on the joints
