Piriformis Syndrome
Piriformis syndrome occurs when the piriformis muscle, located deep in the buttock, irritates or compresses the sciatic nerve. This can lead to buttock pain and radiating pain down the leg, often mistaken for sciatica caused by a disc problem.
The condition is commonly related to prolonged sitting, repetitive activities, pelvic imbalance, or poor movement patterns. Tightness or dysfunction of the piriformis muscle can alter hip and pelvic mechanics, increasing pressure on the sciatic nerve.
Common symptoms of piriformis syndrome:
- Deep pain in the buttock
- Pain radiating down the back of the leg
- Discomfort when sitting or walking
- Tightness in the hip or reduced hip mobility
How chiropractic care can help?
Chiropractic care focuses on improving pelvic and hip alignment, reducing muscle tension, and restoring normal movement patterns. Treatment may include pelvic and spinal adjustments, soft tissue techniques, stretching, and corrective exercises.
By addressing the underlying biomechanical issues, chiropractic care can reduce nerve irritation, relieve pain, and help prevent recurring symptoms.
